Activated Biochar
Amazing Structure Enhancing Soil Amendment
Couldn't load pickup availability
ACTIVATED BIOCHAR 0.25 - 0.25 - 0.25 is superheated wood and plant matter, burned through a process without oxygen, then ground into a fine consistency and marinated in worm castings, worm casting extract, mycorrhizal fungi and select minerals for several weeks. Rigid and highly porous, biochar acts like a sponge, retaining water, storing nutrients, providing aeration and helping to prevent compaction. These tiny “soil reefs” become home to billions of beneficial microorganisms and encourage microbial diversity in the soil. Biochar also lasts forever, prolonging soil fertility, improving resilience and sequestering atmospheric carbon. It's also excellent for rehydrating garden soils that have become hydrophobic from periods of drought.
Simply put, Activated Biochar is one of the best structural, soil amendments available.

Soil Candy's Activated Biochar is aged in worm castings, minerals and various nutrients for several weeks. This activation process makes it immediately available for use.*

What is biochar any how does it improve soil structure?

Biochar is created from wood and plant matter through a process of super heating, grinding and screening. The result is tiny, highly porous pieces that act like a sponge, soaking up nutrients, water and atmospheric carbon. Once the porous pieces are full and mixed into soil, they become storage reservoirs of nutrients and water attracting billions of beneficial soil microbes. These little "soil reefs" encourage microbial diversity and as microbes consume the nutrients, the stiff structure of the biochar allows them to create tiny pockets of air so they can breathe, keeping the soil aerated and preventing compaction.

The Benefits of Activated Biochar include:

Storing nutrients for future plant use.

Decreasing nutrient runoff.

Improving microbial diversity.

Improving water retention.

Increasing soil aeration.

Decreasing soil compaction.

Prolonging soil fertility and resilience.

Sequestering 2.5x its weight in atmospheric carbon.

Decreasing soil pollution.

*Note - raw biochar will soak up nutrients from the soil for the first 3-6 months, depriving plants during that period. Soil Candy Activated Biochar is pre-charged and ready for use immediately.

Biochar is speculated to have been used as a soil supplement thousands of years ago in the Amazon basin, where regions of fertile soil called "Terra Preta'" (dark earth) were created by indigenous people. They witnessed how forests would recover after fires, growing much more vigorously than unburned parts.
BioChar is a soil amendment made from the carbon skeleton of wood, or other organic matter, through the process of super heating. Every small piece of biochar has millions of molecular bonding sites that hold water, nutrients, microbes, fungi, and bacteria that would otherwise be washed away or die from harsh conditions. Once introduced to your soil, biochar will stay for years, helping build the soil profile. Applying BioChar results in rich, carbon-heavy soil that feeds itself and the plants growing in it.
- Improves soil health with particles designed to attract nutrients, beneficial bacteria, microbes, and water, making all of these more available for plants
- Builds rich, carbon-heavy soil that requires less fertilizer for plant growth
- Ideal for seeding and composting applications on lawns, gardens, flower beds, potted plants, etc.
- BioChar lasts in the soil for years, helping build the soil profile over time.
- Environmentally friendly, User friendly; can be blended with fertilizers, alongside any fertilizer program, or used alone
Note: while Active Biochar appears to be charcoal, there is a big difference. Because of the super heating process, Soil Candy Biochar is highly porous and not smoky. Charcoal isn't very porous and is very smoky, which isn't something you want in the soil or around your plants.
